Summer is the best time of year for most children (& adults!), but it can also get pretty pricey with all of the different activities involved. If your kids are home for the entire summer, they may want to participate in many different activities and unfortunately most of these activities aren’t free. However, there are definitely various low-cost activities that you can do with your children that will fit in your monthly budget. Stick around to see 5 different activities you can do this summer on a budget.
1. Drive-in movies: Drive-ins are a MUST during the summer. Not only do you get a good bang for your buck (you can usually stay for two features in row) but most tickets are going to cost you less than 8 dollars! Another big deal at the drive-in is the affordable concessions. The drive-in concessions cost way less than your average movie theater. At the drive-in in my town, I can pick up a bag of popcorn, soda, and candy for under 10 bucks! This is unheard of at most mainstream movie theaters, and the kids will indeed enjoy this “vintage” activity.
2. Stargazing: With the solar eclipse coming up (August 21st for all of you that weren’t aware), stargazing is an activity the whole family will enjoy! Pick up a kiddie pool from dollar general and fill it with pillows and blankets to host your first family stargazing night! Not only will you become a pro at finding all of the different constellations, but you will get to have a relaxing evening with your family just staring at the stars.
3. Swimming: Swimming is a staple in most kids’ summer schedule. However, if you don’t have a pool that you belong to don’t worry! Try public pools that don’t require a membership or check out the fees for guest passes to your neighborhood pool. Plan to get to the pool early to get a good spot as well as get the most bang for your buck. Many pools allow you to bring your own food as well, so that will keep the trip cost efficient. Just remember, no glass bottles!
4. Farmers Markets: Head to the farmers market for a fun summer activity! Most cities have one (if not multiple) markets that may include food, plants, and different hand-made crafts. Not only is it fun to look around at all the different items that are being sold, but many markets have live-music and food trucks as well. This gives you the opportunity to make a day out of being at the market and to enjoy your community as well.
5. Free- Admission Days: Your local zoo, amusement park, or museum may have free or discounted admission days. Many times these days are during the week and are a perfect time to take your kiddo with you! As always, look for deals online that may help you save an additional amount.
